OVERVIEW:
The Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera is a 12.1 megapixel camera that is suited for underwater, outdoor, and rugged use. The D10 is shockproof, waterproof, and freezeproof. It is an entry-level camera for the rugged photographer.
PROS:
The main feature of the D10 is it is able to be submerged underwater and still be able to take crisp and vibrant photos. For its ruggedness, the D10 can reach depths of up to 10 meters and is capable of operating in minus 10 degrees and is able to survive a couple of hits or a drop from 4 meters even. Other than that it works just like another point and shoot camera.
Weighing at 7.4 ounces with dimensions of 4.1” x 2.6” x 1.9”, the D10 is a small compact camera capable of a little abuse. The camera is also able to capture photos using 1/2.3 CCD image sensor. Framing and reviewing photos is easy using the 2.5” LCD screen which contains 230,000 pixels.
The Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera is equipped with a 3.0x optical zoom lens with aperture size of F2.8-4.9 and a focal length of 35-105 mm.
The D10 has a built in camera flash and is capable of modes in Auto, Fill-in, Slow synchro, Flash OFF, and Red-eye Reduction. It has an effective flash range of 1 ft to 1 in and features an AF illuminator.
The DIGIC 4 image processor allows the camera to effectively use Canon’s SmartAuto mode adjusting to the prevailing conditions guaranteeing excellent quality photos in every shot.
There are various shooting modes for the D10. Light sensitivity is between ISO 100 and ISO 1600. White balance has six modes to choose from particularly Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, Underwater, and Custom. Exposure metering is determined by evaluative, center-weighted average and spot. The camera is also equipped with several color effects such as Vivid, Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, Vivid Red, Neutral, Sepia, Black and White, Positive Film, Lighter Skin Tone, Darker Skin Tone and Custom.
The D10 has four recording modes namely SmartAuto, Program, Scene and Movie. If you want good quality photos without much trouble the SmartAuto mode is recommended and produces excellent results. The Program mode allows you to select ISO, white balance, light metering, and color effect manually giving you more control over your photos. There is a list of scene modes as well particularly Portrait, Landscape, Fireworks, Long Shutter, and Underwater, as the D10 is specifically built for taking underwater photos.
In movie mode the Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera is capable of recording video at resolutions of 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second on AVI format. Still photos are recorded at resolutions of 4,000 x 3,000 on JPEG format. Videos and photos are saved on a SD Memory Card.
Batteries for the D10 are custom-made for the camera, a rechargeable Lithium ion power source that lasts up to 220 shots.
CONS:
The Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera is built for taking underwater photos and above the water and on the ground the D10 is one clumsy camera. It is poorly designed for everyday use and is quite pricey for the occasional camera. The camera is slow considering it’s built for the outdoors and underwater. Shot-to-shot times are 2 seconds without flash and 3.9 seconds with flash.
The D10 being built for the outdoors isn’t your everyday camera. If you want a camera that you can bring and use on a regular basis, then the D10 is not the camera you would want to buy.
Underwater accessories are most certainly available for the Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Camera. An accessory kit which contains a neoprene case, a shoulder and neck strap, carabiner strap, and three faceplates is available at a price for the D10. The camera also comes with a USB and A/V cable and bundled software in a CD-ROM. Higher capacity SD Memory Cards for expansion are also compatible with the D10.
