Nikon CoolPix S6000 Review

The CoolPix S6000 is a lightweight compact that weighs only 5.5 ounces including batteries and memory card and easily fits in your pocket and palm with dimensions of 3.9” x 2.2” x 1”. The CoolPix S6000 is the thinnest camera in its class combining convenient portability and excellent performance.

The Nikon CoolPix S6000 Digital Camera comes equipped with a Nikkor 7x optical zoom lens with focal lengths of 28 mm to 196 mm equivalent to 35 mm cameras. Lens aperture for the S6000 is rated at F/3.7 to 5.6. The lens focuses automatically with a minimum range of 19.7 inches, while the macro lens closes the focus range to about 3 cm.

The 14 megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor allows for high quality prints as large as 20” x 30”. Light sensitivities for the optical sensor; a maximum of ISO 3200 captures great images in low-light conditions. Exposure is determined through Face-priority, Center-weighted, Spot, and Matrix. The camera allows for two shooting modes; Program and Automatic. Automatic mode lets the camera determine the appropriate settings given the situation while Program mode will allow you to change certain settings like ISO sensitivity and white balance.

The Nikon CoolPix S6000 has a four way VR Image Stabilization System that reduces blurring due to camera shakes or subject movement. Nikon’s Best Shot Selector feature takes up to 10 shots of the subject and then saves the sharpest image. Nikon’s Smart Portrait System assists you in getting that perfect shot. The system includes features such as Smile Timer, Blink Proof, Blink Warning, In Camera Red-Eye Fix, Face-Priority AF, and Skin Softening. The EXPEED Image Processor assures high quality and vivid pictures with sharp and crisp colors.

The Nikon CoolPix S6000 Digital Camera has new advanced flash control that provides the right amount of flash given the current lighting conditions. The flash has an effective range of 3.6 ft to 11 ft that reduces the effect of red-eye.

The CoolPix S6000 has no optical viewfinder but framing and reviewing captured photographs is easily done with a built-in 2.7-inch TFT active matrix colored LCD display rated at 230,000 pixels.

The S6000 uses the Nikon EN-EL12 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery as a power source and is able to capture 210 shot per charge. Storage for the camera is through an SD memory card or SDHC memory card. The memory card is able to save images in JPEG format with maximum resolution of 4320 x 3240 and high definition videos in MPEG-4 format with a resolution of 1280 x 720 at 30 frames per second. 

The Nikon CoolPix S6000 Digital Camera’s battery can only be charged in-camera which may be an inconvenience when travelling. The glossy rear shell can attract fingerprints and sometimes can get messy. In some cases, when lightning conditions are not perfect, a lens flare may appear in a photo or two.

The S6000 takes soft photos and some fringing occurs on the images.

The camera is not compatible with MMC cards and limits the choices of storage devices for the Nikon CoolPix S6000.
