Brother Intellifax 2800 Review
Editor's Review
Brother Intellifax 2800 by Erik Lynch 08/20/2010 OVERVIEW: This, once state of the art, fax machine may be getting old, but still has the ability to execute many of the convenient fax features that are timeless, like storing a large fax memory and executing a superfine fax. Its usefulness, though no longer competitive, is not completely obsolete.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The only inarguable fact that belongs in this machine's "pro" category is the fact that it can send a fax. It is slower, clunker, and uglier than new machines. That being said, it does offer some interesting features that have gone out of style in recent times, such as a dedicated handset. With a telephone built directly into the machine, users with small offices will no longer have to sacrifice an entire land line for the sake of the machine. It is also very convenient for ordering takeout food via a faxed menu. The fax memory is actually, even by today's standards, really not that bad on the Brother Intellifax 2800. With up to 90 pages worth of data available, it would seem to be a proficient amount for almost any applications. Considering that the fax memory is really only important for a heavily used multifunctional device that has constant, simultaneous tasks going on, this amount is quite sufficient. The fax resolution is also fairly good, though these standards have existed for a long time due to limitations of the technology. 203 x 98 dot per inch standard resolution, 203 x 196 dot per inch fine / photo resolution, and 203 x 392 superfine resolution are all selectable, though it is doubtful that manufactures would refer to 203 x 392 as superfine today. CONS: The fax modem in this machine is downright slow. The 14.4 Kbps standard that this unit adheres to went out a long time ago in favor of the faster 33.6 Kbps modem and even the occasional 54 k. Transmission speed is only 6 seconds per page. While this may actually seem like a short period of time, an office level machine such as this is occasionally required to send stacks of fax material hundreds of pages long, or at least they used to be. With current fax speeds as fast as three and even 2 seconds per page, this machine gets left in the dust. Despite the usefulness of the fax memory, with only 2 MBs total, print speed itself, along with processing functions, will suffer terribly. The 20 page automatic document feeder and 200 page maximum input capacity, though not completely atrocious, are still not acceptable for a respectable fax machine, and the unit's abilities to double as a copy machine are so atrocious they're not even worth mentioning. INK/TONER NEEDS:
The Brother Intellifax 2800 falls short in the category of toner yield as well, with a page yield of only 2,200 pages per toner cartridge. The drum itself also holds only 12,000 pages worth of yield at 5% coverage, leaving one last disappointing thing about the machine that buyers should beware of. |
