Editor's Review
Brother MFC-7225N by Erik Lynch 08/22/2010 OVERVIEW: This network fax machine / multifunctional center is capable of a wide range of connectivity thanks to a built in Ethernet card and built in fax modem. Though its operating speeds are only average, what stands out about this machine is the amount of hardware included in the Brother MFC-7225N.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: Cool features such as a 4 day battery backup make the Brother MFC-7225N stand out as a device that includes innovations possibly not seen in similar units. With a 4 day battery backup, the power could go out during your entire vacation while you're away and your data would be safe and sound. Onboard memory allows for various forms of stored data including phonebooks and page data. Though its price tag runs a little higher than other multifunctional devices with similar features, this MFC in particular includes network abilities, which often raises a unit's price tag considerably. With networkability, this small machine could potentially serve an entire office. While this would be impractical for purposes as a printer, a single small fax machine may be all that a small office would require. 32 MBs of memory is a little more than we usually see in units of this type from this era, and can be a great help when dealing with simultaneous network tasking, which is most likely why it is there in the first place. Both PCL 6 and BR-Script 3 emulations are found within the Brother MFC-7225N, which ensures that the unit can handle a variety of fonts and graphics easily and swiftly. Print resolution is actually quite good and runs at 2400 x 600 dots per inch. At this print quality, not only will text come out looking extra sharp, imagery, such as charts and graphs, will look optimal. The 30 page automatic document feeder holds plenty of sheets, and is absolutely essential for sending large fax workloads, as well as executing large copy and scan projects while using the built in LCD screen. CONS: For just under three hundred dollars, a 20 page per minute print speed is not really up to par. Copy speed runs at the same rate and, for the money, leaves something to be desired. You couldn't really ask for anything more than the built in 33.6 K fax modem, other than Super G3 technology, which the unit lacks, and is therefore slower than other machines in this category. The Brother MFC-7225N is also just a little too expensive for comfort, and should only be considered by buyers who will absolutely take advantage of the network abilities included in the device.
INK/TONER NEEDS:
The drum unit for the Brother MFC-7225N runs at a slightly low page yield of 12,000 pages. Though this means it will last a considerably long time, consumables such as this can be quite costly, yet, when compared to inkjet technology, is relatively inexpensive. The toner cartridge itself holds up to 2,500 pages worth of yield which ensures that refill cycles will remain long, even under moderate conditions. |
