Canon ImageCLASS D880 Review
Editor's Review
Canon ImageCLASS D880 by Erik Lynch 08/23/2010 OVERVIEW: Most outstanding about the Canon ImageCLASS D880 printer is its excellent laser print quality that is selectable up to very high resolutions. It also comes with a large paper cassette and full print and copy functions, though the unit itself is over five years old, and its performance specifications leave much to be desired.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: With a large, legal size platen glass built in to the Canon ImageCLASS D880 for oversized copies, users will be able to make large reproductions, and even shrink down inputted data from multiple sheets onto one thanks the built in 2 on 1 feature. Most notably about the machne's copy abilities, however, is the incorporated 30 page automatic document feeder. With a document feeder capable of holding a full 30 pages of input, users can execute multiple copies in a row without having to deal with hand loading them one by one. If a single copy is desired, users can still take advantage of the flip top, flatbed cover that allows copies of three dimensional objects such as books or magazines to be made easily, and quickly. The fax features are also up to speed with what one would find in stores today due to the Super G3 fax modem that can execute a transmission speed of about 3 seconds per page. Maximum fax resolution is very good indeed and is selectable all the way up to 406 x 391 dots per inch, which is very good quality considering the data is being transmitted over a phone line. Other fax features include up to 255 pages of fax phone memory, 12 speed dials, and 100 coded dials. CONS: The copy speed of 18 pages per minute that the Canon ImageCLASS D880 may have been top of the line for its era, but five years later this figure is sub par. The unit also has absolutely no scanning features whatsoever, or a fax modem for that matter, making it a very bare bones multifunctional device by current standards. Print speed is surprisingly even slower than copy speed for the unit, due to the device's overall nature as a basic, stand alone personal copier. When doubled as a printer, users can expect top speeds of only 16 pages per minute, which is about half the speed that one would find in a similar device currently on the market. Due to the discontinuation of the Canon ImageCLASS D880 long ago, it is questionable if its warranty would still be considered valid, even on an unopened unit. INK/TONER NEEDS:
Canon utilizes their patented single cartridge system in many of its laser devices, and the Canon ImageCLASS D880 is no exception. Offering a 5,000 page yield at 5% coverage, this printer / copier combo allows buyers the convenience of swapping only one consumable piece of hardware when toner outages occur, ass opposed to the usual separate drum unit and toner cartridge. These hybrid devices save some users significant amounts of time fiddling with toner swaps, though they are sometimes more expensive than standard units. |
