Canon FaxPhone L80 Review
Editor's Review
Canon FaxPhone L80 by Erik Lynch 08/23/2010 OVERVIEW: It's difficult to define a device such as the Canon FaxPhone L80. Technically, it is a multifunctional center capable of printing and copying along with its primary fax function, but these features are so limited the unit really should only be considered for personal and simple fax usage, if at all.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The big upside to the Canon FaxPhone L80 is that is fax transmission speeds run just fine. It is really in the paper handling and printing departments that the unit is severely limited, but the built in 33.6 Kbps modem is just what one would expect in a device of this caliber, and is actually faster than many devices from the Canon FaxPhone L80's time period. With a decent modem on board, the Canon FaxPhone L80 is capable of transmitting a fax at 3 seconds per page. Though the Super G3 modems out there can often tighten this speed up to 2 seconds, this old unit, with its bulky headset, deserves a break in that department. The headset that is included with the unit is actually a plus for some buyers. Though the Canon FaxPhone L80 is not exactly a substitute for a small office phone on one's desk due to its much larger size, it could be very helpful in a home office environment for one to combine their printer with their commonly used land line telephone. Phone features include the same functions that one would find in a standard office phone, if not more so. The 15 speed dials should prove to be more than enough, while 100 coded speed dials are great for doing large amounts of business through fax. There is also a directory search function to help navigate through the digital phone book. CONS: As a printer, the Canon FaxPhone L80 is not really up to office quality on any level. Its 6 second per page print speed would prove to be very tedious to deal with over time, while its monochrome 600 x 600 dot per inch maximum print quality would also limit its usefulness. Accepted paper sizes are limited almost exclusively to standard ones such as letter, legal, and A4. Paper handling abilities are very light and include a 100 sheet automatic paper tray, along with a more than adequate 30 page automatic document feeder. Still, the Canon FaxPhone L80 should truly only be considered by those who require basic faxing capabilities and nothing more, as its major downfall is its simple lack of up to date hardware.
INK/TONER NEEDS:
As a laser device, the Canon FaxPhone L80 operates by way of a toner cartridge. Canon's single cartridge units, which they often use in their printers, translate to this personal fax machine quite well due to the simplicity of toner swaps and very light intended volume of the machine. Each inexpensive cartridge can produce up to 2,700 pages of yield at 5% coverage which, for a unit like this, could potentially last its entire lifespan, and a full sized starter cartridge is included. |
