review - Canon PC-920 by Erik Lynch 09/13/2010 OVERVIEW:
The Canon PC-920 is a personal desktop copy machine that is one of the true stand alone electronic devices you will find. With no USB connectivity whatsoever, PC hosing is out of the question for this older machine that was designed to bring fully copying capabilities to small businesses and households.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS:
What was once a top of the line machine is now almost completely obsolete, but the Canon PC-920 still has a few tricks up its sleeve. The device comes with a good paper storage capacity made possible by the built in 250 sheet paper tray. The device is also capable of making copies from legal size all the way down to the standard 2 in. x 3.5 in. business card size.
Canon’s rapid FUSION technology reduces warm up time to zero, which is a great bonus present in many of their machines. Unfortunately the first copy out time almost negates this feature with its incredible sluggishness. The Canon PC-920 is truly a bare bones unit and, though no longer business class, could still be used in the household. CONS:
The real downside to this unit is the fact that it completely lacks any multifunctional abilities. This is due solely to the fact that the Canon PC-920 operates using analog copy technology. Digital copy technology that we see today scans input data to an internal memory source, allowing it to be manipulated in countless ways. With analog copying, only direct reproductions can be made and therefore many features that one would expect in a desktop machine are not present.
Reduction and enlargement functions are present in the unit, but only to degrees of 70 – 141%. No internal memory means no 2 on 1 feature, and the usual “scan once, print many” function we see on almost all copy machines available is not present, and every single copy from a single source requires a re-scan of the material.
The unit’s print speed is very restricting, and tops out at 10 pages per minute for letter sized copies and 9 pages per minute for legal size. This sluggish print rate means that large volume copying will not operate at the current business standard.
As far as size and weight, this unit is a beast. With a curb weight of42.5 pounds, the unit is at least twice as heavy as the stand alone analog units that Canon puts out today. Its overall size is arguably even worse, with dimensions of 19 in. x 17 in. x 12 in. The unit is not portable in any way, whereas the current stand alone copiers are so small that they come with handles that allow them to be carried around like briefcases. INK/TONER NEEDS:
The Canon PC-920, like most personal copiers in the Canon’s PC line, uses a single toner system that eliminates a drum unit. In fact, many of the units within the series can interchange cartridges between printer models, which is very rare. The toner cartridges themselves offer 4,000 page yields at 5% coverage and are still readily available today. |
