Fujifilm Finepix Z70 Review
Editor's Review
Fujifilm Finepix Z70 by Andrew Hall 09/29/2010 OVERVIEW: The FujiFilm FinePix Z70 is a touchscreen-based consumer point and shoot digicam offering an above average feature set at a relatively accessible price point, making it of interest to the user looking for a camera with more features in a compact package than for higher-quality images.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The camera measures 3.6" by 2.3" by .8" and weighs 5 ounces without battery, camera or accessories, making it rather portable in clothes pockets or in a bag or suitcase in its own case, depending on your preferences. The Z70 captures images using a 12 megapixel, 1/2" super CCD EXR lens. It saves images to up to 30MB of internal memory, to SD, and to SDHC memory cards. It stores images in JPEG format, compressed via Exif 2.2, or in movies via AVI (containing motion JPEG video). The camera stores images at many resolutions based on aspect ratio and desired filesize. It can store images at 4000 by 3000, 2816 by 2112, 2048 by 1536, 4000 by 2248, 2816 by 1584, and 1920 by 1080. The camera records movies at resolutions in standard definition of 320 by 240, 640 by 480 and at 1280 by 720 in high definition.
The camera has a 5x optical zoom lens. Its focal length is between f=6.4 and 32mm, equivalent to a 35mm camera with a range between 35 and 175mm. The camera includes a 4x digital zoom as well. The camera's focus distance changes in Normal and in Macro; in Normal, the camera's Wide range is between 2' and infinity and in Telephoto between 3.3' and infinity. In Macro, the camera's focus distance is between 3.5" and 2.6' in Wide and 1.3' and 2.6' in Telephoto.
The camera's aperture in Wide is between F3.9 and F6.4, and in Telephoto between F4.7 and F8.0.
The camera's sensitivity can be set to configure automatically or to ISO equivalents of 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200. It has a programmed auto exposure control and exposure compensation between -2 and +2 EV moving in 1/3 step increments, which can be manually configured.
The camera offers many shooting modes. It can be set to EXR Auto, Auto, Touch & Shoot, Scene Position, Natural Light, Natural Light & with Flash, Manual, Movie, as well as to Portrait, Portrait Enhancer, Landscape, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Party, Flower, Text, Dog, and Cat.
The camera includes an optical, CCD-shift type image stabilizer. Its shutter moves between 1/1000 and 4 seconds, and offers a maximum speed of .6 seconds per frame. The camera has a 2-10 second self-timer as well as Couple Timer, Group Timer, and Auto-shutter functions. The camera's focus can be set to single autofocus, continuous autofocus, center fixed, auto area, and place of touch.
The camera's white balance can be set to Auto, Fine, Shade, Incandescent light, Fluorescent light 1 (Daylight), Fluorescent light 2 (Warm White), or Fluorescent light 3 (Cool White) settings.
The camera has an automatic flash with an effective range in Normal, when set to Wide, between 2' and 12.8' and in Telephoto between 3' and 10.5'. In Macro, its range is between 1' and 2.6'. It offers a handful of flash modes based on whether or not red-eye reduction is off or on, and can be set to Forced Flash, Suppressed Flash, and Slow Synchro in various permutations.
The camera has a 3.5", TFT color LCD monitor offering approximately 460000 dots at 100% coverage an a 16:9 aspect ratio. Unlike many other cameras, it functions as a touchscreen, driving all menus through that instead of dials or other physical components. This may be a selling point for some users and a breaking point-level frustration for others.
The camera has on-camera editing and folder management built into its playback functions.
The camera connects to cameras and printers via USB 2.0. It is powered by a lithium-ion battery included with the camera, though a higher-capacity variant is available and it can also be powered by an AC power adapter with a DC coupler.
CONS: The touch screen gets extremely warm in short periods of time, making it potentially troublesome for users who need to take many shots whilst leaving the camera on the entire time.
