Gestetner DSm-735 Review
Editor's Review
Gestetner DSm-735 by Geoff Coldiron 08/24/2010 OVERVIEW: With virtually unrivaled speed and power and seemingly endless expansion and upgrade capabilities, the Gestetner DSm-735 black and white copier is hands-down one of the most versatile large-office grade black and white copy machines available today. This machine makes other lower-end, personal printers pale in comparison to the point where they are practically nonexistent. The hefty price tag is well worth the results, guaranteeing a return of investment for companies that require the ability to produce high-volume, high-speed work.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The Gestetner DSm-735 boasts an incredibly fast print speed of 35 pages per minute, which places this machine extremely close to the top of its class. The printing process is executed using twin laser beam scanning and electro-photographic printing which account for the unusually fast print, scan, copy and fax times. Standard system RAM memory is 128 MB with an option to upgrade to 384 MB. A single 40 GB hard disk drive allows for on-board storage of thousands of scanned documents and documents accessed through network resources. An 80 sheet automatic document feeder allows for a greater sheet feeding capacity that can far exceed the capabilities of human hands. A maximum resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch and 256 levels of grayscale shading ensure crisp and sharp text document reproduction with professional-looking results. A three-digit quantity indicator allows for a maximum of 999 copies, so the user can set the job up, verify that paper is loaded, and let the machine do the work while time is spent on other tasks. This model can warm up and be fully ready in approximately 15 seconds and the first copy speed is 4.3 seconds, whether the unit is brought out of standby or fully powered up after being off all night. The larger dimensional footprint and weight, which are due to the amount of hardware features that are available, make this copier ideal for larger offices with copy rooms that can accommodate the bulk in order to benefit from the high volume capabilities. Additional paper handling trays and banks can be purchased to bring the total paper handling capacity of this model up to 3,675 sheets, enough to handle even the most demanding copying jobs. The fax capabilities of the Gestetner DSm-735 are also formidable, with a standard 33.6 Kbps fax modem that can transmit at a rate between 2 and 3 seconds per page, depending on the compression method used. This model cones standard with 4 MB of fax memory that is upgradeable to 28 MB. A dual-access option permits the DSm-735 to operate simultaneously as two fax machines, which comes in handy for offices that choose to enable network faxing capabilities, which is a standard option. The optional SR790 Finisher 1000 finishing tray can staple up to 1000 sheets of paper, another feature that makes this copier desirable for high volume operation, allowing mass production of rather sizable booklets in an efficient manner. CONS: The standard 1,050 sheet paper handling capacity is less than sufficient to meet the output capacity of the unit and it is less than a third of what the total handling capacity is with all the optional paper tray upgrades available. The standard hardware reduces this machine to a medium-volume production copier. The base weight of 214 pounds, which is already quite heavy, is significantly increased by the addition of available hardware upgrades. Toner cartridge yield far exceeds normal, small office and home office requirements and can seriously affect the bottom line of a company that does not need or utilize it. This model and specification of copier is designed for specifically high-volume production and is targeted to customers who intend to use it specifically for that.
INK/TONER NEEDS:
A high-yield replacement toner option is available for this model that has a capacity of up to 30,000 pages at 5% coverage, double that of comparable models, and is very inexpensive, making the cost per page extraordinarily low for this particular high-volume application. |
