Konica Minolta DiALTA CF2002

OVERVIEW:

The Konica Minolta DiALTA CF2002 is a copier, expandable into an all-in-one unit, designed to handle a large throughput of paper in both color and in black and white with respectable speeds across both. With the optional printer and scanner included, the unit can easily handle a small to medium-sized office's printing needs.

Editor's Pros & Cons

PROS:

The copier measures 23" by 28" by 22" and the all-in-one unit measures 23" by 31" by 41" and weighs 270 lbs. This makes the system too large and too heavy to fit on a desk but able to fit comfortably on a credenza or on its own table able to bear heavier loads.

The copier produces documents at rates of up to 31 copies per minute for black and white documents and 20 copies per minute for color documents on A4-sized paper. This slows considerably when printing to A3-sized paper; the copier produces 15 copies per minute in black and white and 10 color copies per minute. It can produce a maximum of 999 copies at a time.

The CF2002 magnifies and reduces documents between sizes of 25% and 400%, adjustable in .1% steps. All documents scan at a maximum resolution of 600 by 600 dpi. With an added printer module, all documents print at a resolution of 600 by 1800 dpi.

The CF2002 includes 256MB of RAM standard, expandable to 512MB. A 10GB hard drive is also included standard for job retention, though hard drives do add moving parts and a potential point of failure to the device, worth taking into consideration when purchasing an older copier.

The copier has a standard paper capacity of 751 sheets, which can be expanded to a maximum of 3251 sheets if necessary. This allows the copier to hold over six reams of paper, well over what many offices will go through in a short period of time, greatly reducing potential downtime.

There are a number of optional finishing modes available for the copier, including a 100-sheet automatic document feeder, a stapler, a sorter, a hole puncher, a folding unit, and a booklet creator. Without one of these units, the printer has an output capacity of 250 sheets.

The printer add-on is available as two units, either the CN3101e or the CN3102e, and their features differ slightly. The CN3101e supports PCL 5c as its sole printing language, has 160MB of memory, includes an IEEE-1284 parallel port, USB, and 10/100Base-T ethernet, and shares its hard drive space with the copier. The CN3102e supports both PCL5c as well as Adobe PS3, has 256MB of memory, only includes an IEEE-1284 parallel port and a 10/100Base-T ethernet port, and includes its own 10GB hard drive. The CN3102e includes Fiery suite tools as well.

The optional scanner scans documents up to 31 scans per minute and has a maximum resolution of 600 by 600 dpi. Like many all-in-one units, it includes many options, including scanning to email, to FTP, to PCs, and to its own hard drive.

CONS:

The copier's resolution maxes out at 600 dpi for almost all of its functions except for printing. For extremely high-resolution scanning and copying applications, you may want to consider another unit with a higher maximum resolution to ensure the quality of your copies.

While the copier can send internet faxes, the unit does not have a modem built-in for sending faxes. If you need to use such applications regularly, you may wish to consider another unit.

The printer is rated at a lifetime total of 800000 sheets or 5 years. Depending on your office's paper throughput, this may be woefully low and worth considering before committing to a unit as substantial as this one.

INK/TONER NEEDS:

The DiALTA CF2002 requires four toner cartridges to ensure consistent black and white and color printing. Black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges are all rated at 11500 page yields at 5% coverage. Each color also requires its own drum unit rated at 80000 pages, which doesn't quite synchronize with the toner replacement schedule. Given that the drum units are costly, this does mean that you will be saving money by separating the two items' replacement, but that maintenance for the unit will be more frequent than in a system with integrated toner/drum cartridges.
