Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: A Laser Direct Electrostatic copy and print process, as well as a Dry Dual Component development process, can produce quality prints at a top speed of 35 pages per minute. An automatic document feeder is included with the base unit, which has an 85 sheet capacity for letter size paper at a 20 pound weight. Paper feed capacities are provided by a standard 1,550 sheet tray, plus an extra 550 sheet paper tray unit and a 50 sheet bypass feeder. A maximum paper feed capacity of 6,250 sheets is attainable with available upgrade options. The input trays can handle a paper weight range of 16 to 24 pounds and the bypass feeder can accommodate paper weights of up to 35 pounds due to a straight-through printing slot in the mechanism that can accommodate thicker stock. Supported network protocols include SMTP, LDAP and NTLM secure user authentication for print, copy, scan, email and fax modes. Hard disk drive overwrite, print memory erasure and fax memory erasure are integrated security features that ensure privacy for even the most classified document processing jobs. The print module comes equipped with a 10BaseT/100Base-TX Ethernet controller and a bi-directional parallel port for direct or network connectivity. Multiple supported communications protocols provide plenty of network connection options, supporting a wide range of computers, network devices, operating systems and software applications. A warm up time of approximately 30 seconds is less than half the average time that comparable models take to power up from a full shutdown. Client operating systems as recent as Windows XP are compatible with the Panasonic DP-8035, as well as network operating systems as recent as Windows Server 2003. Mac OS X is also supported with functionality limited to PostScript operations. First copy time averages 5.8 seconds for short waits when copying one page documents. Maximum resolution can be set to 600 dots per inch with 256 steps of grayscale gradation. Original documents can be enlarged up to 200% and reduced as much as 50%. A maximum selectable copy quantity of 999 automatically resets to 1 after completion or cancellation of a job. Exposure control can be set to text, text and graphics combined and just graphics. A standard memory option is 32 MB of image memory plus 12 GB of hard disk space. Optional memory upgrades can provide a maximum of 160 MB of RAM, purchasable in 16, 64 and 128 MB increments. Fast network scanning capabilities can accommodate up to ledger size pages at 1200 dots per inch color resolution for easy digitization of office documents. Scanned pages can be encoded in TIFF or PDF format for easy reading. An optional G3 fax, with a 33.6 Kbps transmission rate and 4 different compression schemes can transmit at a rate of less than 3 seconds per page at letter size. Email and internet fax capabilities allow convenient document transmission to other offices and easy email integration. CONS: No USB capabilities make direct connection extremely difficult with a lot of newer PC's and laptops that no longer accommodate parallel interfaces. Scanning and copying resolutions are about average, limiting top quality production to documents that contain all text.
INK/TONER NEEDS:
One standard black toner cartridge is available for purchase as a replacement and has an average yield capacity of 38,000 copies. At the average price of toner for this model, toner cost per page is extremely low and print jobs of normal volume can be executed for months before cartridge replacement is necessary. |
