Ricoh Aficio 2045 Review
Editor's Review
Ricoh Aficio 2045 by Andrew Hall 09/05/2010 OVERVIEW: The Ricoh Aficio 2045 is an all-in-one unit built to print, scan, fax and copy at high speeds in modern network environments with all the features necessary to do so built-in. For a small office environment, the Aficio's high speeds will likely meet paper throughput needs without much trouble.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The 2045 measures 23.6" by 25.6" by 32.3" and weighs 200 lbs, making it highly likely that the copier will need its own table or credenza. The 2045 produces pages at a rate of 45 pages per minute and at maximum resolutions of 600 by 600 dpi both when printing and copying. Automatic duplexing is standard. It supports paper sized between 5.5" by 8.5" and 11" by 17" and between 1 and 999 copies made at a time, consistent with most models. Furthermore, the copier reduces or enlarges documents between sizes of 25% and 400% in 1% increments, essentially competitive with other models, though some offer the more precise setting of .1% increments if desired.
The 2045 has a standard paper capacity of 1000 sheets across 2 500-sheet trays, plus a 50-sheet bypass tray. This can be expanded to 2500 by replacing the 50-sheet bypass tray with a Large Capacity Tray capable of holding up to 1500 sheets, enabling the copier to hold a total of 2500 sheets, five reams of paper, and well over most offices' daily throughput. A 1000-sheet, multi-tray, or booklet finished is also available as an add-on.
The 2045 includes a 10/100 BaseTX Ethernet connection and IEEE-1284 Parallel ports by default, but this can be expanded to render the unit much more forward-compatible. USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 Firewire, Bluetooth, and 802.11b wireless connectivity are all available, which will allow the printer to connect to virtually any device manufactured in the last twenty years. Furthermore, the printer supports TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, SMB, and AppleTalk protocols, again making connectivity possible across almost any configuration.
The copier includes 64MB of RAM, expandable to 320 MB, and a 20 GB hard drive. The scanner has a separate 192 MB of RAM, and the fax machine features 4 MB expandable to a maxium of 28. Newer copiers can be expanded well beyond this.
The scanner can, depending on the driver used, produce varying numbers of copies: using ScanRouter it scans 52 images per minute at 200 dpi, and via TWAIN it scans 36 ipm. It has a maximum resolution of 600 dpi and a maximum image size of 11" by 17" and can transmit images via Ethernet, IEEE 1394 Firewire, and 802.11b, if those connections are installed.
The optional fax machine has support for one phone line built in expandable to a maximum of three. It supports resolutions of 200 or 400 dpi and is rated to send, via G3, either 3 seconds per page or 2 seconds per page depending on if JBIG compression is used or not. Memory expansion increases the number of speed dials and group dials that the fax machine can store, as well as the number of documents and user codes. CONS: Newer all-in-one units offer significantly higher resolutions across printing, scanning and copying applications, with resolutions of 800, 1200 and 1600 dpi available. Without expansion, the 2045 cannot be connected to non-legacy PCs in non-networked environments, requiring the addition of at least one other connection form in order to make the unit configurable and functional.

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The Ricoh Aficio 2045 has three components that require somewhat regular replacement: its ink, its toner, and its developer. The 2045's toner cartridge requires replacement after printing approximately 30000 pages at an average coverage of 5%. The copier's developer requires replacement at about the same time, as it is also rated at 30000 pages. Finally, at every 150000 pages, or every 5 toner/developer units, the drum unit requires replacement. Because these three components are separate, you may bring down long-term costs, though the amount of maintenance necessary to maintain printer function will likely go up as a consequence. |
