Ricoh Aficio MP-C2500 by Andrew Hall 09/08/2010 OVERVIEW: The Ricoh Aficio MP C2500 is an all-in-one printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine that boasts high paper speeds and easy operation for environments with many demands placed upon both users and equipment, allowing for easy software operation and minimal maintenance based on its high paper capacities.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The Aficio MP C2500 measures 25.59" by 25.9" by 29.13" and weighs less than 264 lbs with Automatic Document Reversing Finishing enabled.
The Aficio MP C2500 produces copies, in either black and white or in full color, at 25 copies per minute, only slightly above the standard 20 copies per minute available on most machinery available now. However, it can handle an extremely high paper throughput, as shown by the fact that the copier can be configured to produce up to 999 copies at a time. It includes two 550 sheet paper trays and a 100-sheet bypass tray, expandable to a maximum of 3200 sheets by adding a large capacity tray. Its paper output can also contain a maximum of 1500 sheets sized between A6 and A3. Finishing options include a 500-sheet finisher, a 1000-sheet multi-tray finisher, a 1000-sheet booklet finisher, and punch kits.
The C2500 includes 1024MB of RAM and a 40 GB hard drive. While the hard drive's capacity is standard and likely more than satisfactory for almost all applications, 1024MB is a large amount of RAM even for a multipurpose unit, and its inclusion ensures fast speeds and helps to minimize frustration.
The C2500's copier function allows for documents to be reduced or enlarged between 25% and 400%, moving in 1% increments. Some units offer the precision of .1%, but for many applications this should be satisfactory.
The C2500's scanner can scan up to 50 original documents, sized between A5 and A3, per minute at a maximum resolution of 1200 dpi, though this is only in grayscale and via TWAIN. It can output documents to PDF, JPEG, TIFF, or PDF and also supports scan to e-mail via SMTP up to 500 addresses per job, scan to folder via SMB or FTP, and can maintain an internal address book via LDAP of 2000 addresses. This makes the C2500 more than ideal for company-wide scanning jobs which require many people to receive documents.
The C2500's printer produces documents at 25 pages per minute at resolutions of 600 by 600 dpi, equivalent to 2400 by 600 dpi. It interfaces with computer equipment via USB 2.0 or 10/100 base-TX Ethernet, with options for connectivity including Bi-directional IEEE-1284 Parallel, IEEE-1394 Firewire, 802.11b, Bluetooth, and external USB host devices. It allows for networking via TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, or AppleTalk to ensure forwards and backwards compatibility with most contemporary systems. PictBridge functionality is also available.
The C2500's optional fax system supports PSTN and PBX circuits and connects via a modem that moves at 33.6 kbps. Images scan at a standard resolution of 200 by 100/200 dpi or a maximum of 400 by 400 dpi and scan at a speed of .4 seconds/page. It includes 4 MB of RAM standard and a maximum of 28 MB.
The C2500 includes a full-color LCD touch panel intended to make the printer easy to use and interact with. Menus can be configured in order to remove unused functionality and include animations if necessary to guide users through maintenance.
CONS: All rated speeds for paper production listed above are rated for simplex printing, meaning that duplex printing will slow down the amount of prints or copies produced considerably. The optional bridge unit is required in order to install any of the finishing units available for the copier, potentially serving as an initially unseen cost. INK/TONER NEEDS:
The Aficio MP-c2500 consumes toner in black and three colors: cyan, magenta, and yellow, all of which will require replacement to maintain printer and copier function. The MP-C2500's black cartridge is rated at 20000 pages at approximately 5% coverage, while the cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges are all rated at 15000 pages at approximately 5% coverage. A drum unit will also require semi-regular replacement for each color, requiring additional maintenance but bringing long-term costs down. |
