Toshiba e-Studio 3511 by Mel Meyers 08/31/2010 OVERVIEW:
Back before catalytic converters and fuel injection, teens wanted their first car to be something that they could customize. From the engine to the pipes, these soon-to-be legendary hot rods were customized to the whims of their owner-mechanics. For the medium-size office that wants to only have the features they need, Toshiba offers the e-Studio 3511 for 2-sided color printing, copying, and scanning, with options to add phone line facsimile, high-capacity, and publishing options.
Editor's Pros & Cons
PROS: The e-Studio’s basic model gives you a lot of opportunities to customize it to your company’s exact needs. A 2-sided printer-copier, the 3511 comes with two 550-sheet paper trays. The e-Studio has a tilt control panel with a touch panel display that switches from function menu to a QWERTY on-screen keyboard.
One of the nice features of this multifunction is it can multitask. A person can scan or copy directly on the E-Studio while faxing and printing is being done via the network and phone lines. As soon as it’s turned on, Toshiba claims the e-Studio is ready to copy & print.
The E-Studio 3511 prints at B&W speeds up to 35 pages per minute and up to 11 ppm in color. Duplex printing and Toner Save allows for savings on paper and in toner. Monochrome print resolutions are enhanced to 2,400 x 600 dpi. Color resolution is only up to 600 x 600 dpi, but can be increased to 1,200 x 600 with additional RAM.
The optional duplexing Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) can handle 2-sided copying, scanning, and faxing of up to 100 originals.
The 3511 comes with two 550-sheet cassette trays that support papers from 8.5“ x 11” up to 12” x 18”. A 100-sheet multi-purpose bypass tray handles various paper weights from 17 to 110 pounds and sizes up to 12” x 18”. Additional high-volume paper trays are available to provide up to 2,500 additional pages.
The standard 3511 comes standard with USB, Parallel, and Ethernet. 256GB of memory and an 60GB hard drive enables this e-Studio to handle most print requests and to encrypt saved jobs to the hard drive.
Three optional Finishers can give the 3511 full publishing features from stapling, multi-hole punch, to saddle-stitch binding for catalogs and magazines.
While facsimile via a 33.5Kbps modem is available as a separate option, the 3511 comes standard with IP faxing. Using your computer network or Internet, faxes can be transmitted or received in resolutions up to 600 x 600 dpi.
Color copies up to 12” x 18” can be made directly on the glass platen, or using the optional duplex Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). Zoom scales from 25% to 400% and up to 999 copies can be reproduced. By storing the image in memory, copies can be reproduced at 600 x 600 dpi at 35 ppm in B&W or 11 ppm in color.
A unique feature offered by the e-Studio is two-color copying. The e-Studio will take a selected color in the original image and separate the original into two-color copies.
Scanned documents can be exported as 600 x 600 PDF, JPEG, or TIFF files and sent to e-mail, or to it’s the internal electronic filing system. Toshiba allows for public and password-protected folders to be stored on the e-Studio’s 60GB hard for saving scans, copies, prints, and faxes.
Understanding the printing needs of today’s businesses in providing support for the major software applications, Toshiba has included HP PCL5c, PCL6, and Adobe PostScript3 print emulators to satisfy the most office demands. CONS: Because the 3511 is configured for customization by the buyer, the buyer should beware that the “default model” won’t have what Toshiba puts on their brochures. (Ask anybody who owns a Harley motorcycle if they kept their bike “stock”.) If you don’t have a technical person in your business, I suggest to most businesses to add the automatic document feeder, the extra memory for better color resolutions, and extra paper capacity for a start.
One of the things you need to consider when you decide to get a color laser printer is if you want “multi-pass” color printing or “single-pass” printing. A multi-pass printer can give you screaming print speeds in Black and White, but will be four times slower printing in color because the paper has to pass through each toner one toner at a time. It’s similar in process to the way t-shirts and banners were manually silk-screened. In monochrome mode, the e-Studio 3511 has superb speeds compared to other B&W laser printers. But in color the 3511 can only print at 11 pages per minute.
All the great features that come standard with the e-Studio 3511, it’s surprising that it’s color resolution for this mid-range all-in-one is limited to 600 x 600 dpi. There are entry-level color laser printers with higher resolutions right out of the box, with less memory requirements. Customer Reviews For Toshiba e-Studio 3511

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The each black toner provides 5% coverage on 27,000 pages, and the three colors 10,000 pages. Just remember that if you’re doing full-color spread layouts and photograph prints, the actual toner usage per page is going to be at least 10 times more, reducing the number of pages you can get out of a cartridge.
The toner can be purchased separately, especially if the yellow toner gets consumed the most. To save on costs, toner combo-packages are also available.
Other consumables to consider are replacement of the imaging units (drums), the fuser and transfer roller, and the waste toner bottle. |
