Xerox Phaser 6180MFP

OVERVIEW:

For serious, high speed color printing, the single-pass Xerox Phaser 6180 comes with everything for right-out-of-the-box color printing, plus expandable memory and PostScript3.

Editor's Pros & Cons

PROS:

In less than 10 seconds, the Phaser 6180 will start printing color prints at speeds up to 20 pages per minute. If you think that’s impressive, monochromatic prints come out at 26 ppm.

The 6180 comes with a 250-sheet cassette tray that supports up to legal-size (8.5” x 14”) paper without expanding the printer’s footprint. A front panel hides a 150-sheet multi-purpose flip-tray for transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards, and paper of various bond weights up to 90 lb. For more capacity, a 550-sheet second tray can be attached. For two-sided printing, a duplex unit option can be added to the 6180 (standard with the 6180DN model).

Having built-in Ethernet network, parallel, and hi-speed USB support, this printer will be right at home either in the middle of an office floor or directly connected to a secretary’s computer. The built-in 128MB of printer memory can be expanded up to over 1GB for handling larger and higher volume print jobs.

Understanding the printing needs of today’s businesses in providing support for the major software applications, Xerox has included the popular HP PCL6 and Adobe PostScript3 print emulators to satisfy the most diverse office demands.
The intuitive control panel on the Phaser 6180 has a multi-line LCD Display to show toner levels and information. The buttons are set up to make understanding what each one does intuitive. The control panel, toner levels, printer information, configuration, emulation, and network settings can be performed directly through the control panel or using Xerox’s CentreWare IS web application.

One of Xerox’s quieter models, the printer produces up to 49dB of sound printing, and idles at 28dB. To give you an idea of what that means: 40 decibels is the level of low conversations and 30 decibels is the level of a quiet room. When set to Power Save mode, the Phaser 6180 is practically silent even when sitting next to you.

CONS:

The only drawback with this Phaser is the 600 x 600 dpi resolution. While color prints from the 6180 are impressive, a higher resolution to keep small fonts sharp would be nice.

INK/TONER NEEDS:

Xerox provides you will full standard-yield toner. The black cartridge is good for 3,000 pages, the cyan, magenta, and yellow good for 2,000 pages (providing you’re not printing full-spread photographic images or graphics). High-yield cartridges are available with up to three-times the capacity. Toner combo-packages are available to save on costs.

The entire front of the printer flips open for easy access to the four toners, fuser, and the transfer unit (or drum), all of which are consumable parts.
